Strategies for Strengthening Democracy: 30 Years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall
The Bulgarian Fulbright Commission is pleased to invite PhD, MA, BA students (juniors or seniors) and civic activists to apply for participation in a one-week seminar on the topic of “Strategies for Strengthening Democracy: 30 Years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall”. The purpose of the seminar is to draw attention to the challenges within the democratic environment in Eastern Europe and globally, and discuss pathways, initiatives and activities for rebuilding it.
The topic addresses the issue of destabilizing social cohesion through devaluing key concepts of democracy, such as: truth, representation, human rights and empathy. In view of the current tensions between liberal and illiberal paths of development, and the rise of disinformation, both in Europe and globally, the seminar will offer access to prominent experts in Political Science, History, Philosophy and Social Sciences from the US and EU, who will outline trends, and together with the seminar participants, will propose strategies for strengthening democratic institutions, practices, and values in the region.
The Fulbright International Seminar is scheduled to take place from September 24 to September 30, 2019, in Sofia, Bulgaria, and will be open to students and civil society representatives from all over the world. To participate in the event, candidates have to submit an application form (download form here), CV, and a copy of diploma or academic transcript (legalization is not required). Up to 50 applicants will be approved for participation. Applying is free of charge; approved candidates will be asked to contribute a participation fee of 200 euro; (Bulgarian students who will not be using accommodation, are invited to contribute 100 euro). Financial aid will be available on the basis of the financial need. Participants will be responsible for travel costs to and from Sofia. A preliminary program for the event can be downloaded here. Deadline for applications is September 10, 2019.
This project builds upon Bulgarian Fulbright Commission’s successful 13 years of experience organizing international summer schools (2002-2015).
