Purpose of the GRE General Test

The purpose of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test is to measure verbal, quantitative, and analytical reasoning skills that have been developed over a long period of time and are not necessarily related to any particular field of study. The General Test is designed to help graduate schools assess the qualifications of applicants for graduate schools. GRE General Test is offered only on computer. The Subject Tests will continue to be offered in the paper-based format.

The Three Sections of the Test

Test takers should plan to be at the test center for approximately 4.5 hours. In addition to actual testing time, this includes time for the tutorials, and providing score reporting and background information. The computer-based General Test consists of one 30-minute verbal section, one 45-minute quantitative section and one 75-minute analytical section with two writing tasks. In addition, there may be an unidentified pretest section and/or an identified research section, neither of which are included in scoring.

The unidentified pretest section can appear in any position in the test. Test takers should not be advised to omit any section. The pretest section contains either a verbal, quantitative or analytical section of questions being tested for possible future use.

The identified research section may consist of either a Writing Test or a Mathematical Reasoning Test. Test takers should refer to the on-line information and direction screens for assistance with any questions they may have pertaining to the test.

The verbal measure tests your ability to analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it, analyze relationships among component parts of sentences, and recognize relationships between words and concepts.

The quantitative measure tests your basic mathematical skills and your understanding of elementary mathematical concepts, as well as your ability to reason quantitatively and solve problems in a quantitative setting.

The analytical measure tests your ability to understand structured sets of relationships, deduce new information from sets of relationships, analyze and evaluate arguments, identify central issues and hypotheses, draw sound inferences, explanations.

Additional information about the GRE Test is provided in the GRE Information and Registration Bulletin and on the GRE website: www.ets.org/gre. The website includes sample questions, capability for purchasing practice materials, information about computer-based testing, Regional Registration Centers, test centers, downloadable publications, and much more.
