Fulbright Bulgaria is looking for a new member of its team to contribute to the success of the Fulbright/America for Bulgaria Foundation English Teaching Assistantship Program in the capacity of ETA Program Assistant. The program works annually with 30+ public high schools across the country and partners with institutions and organizations in the government and non-government sectors to improve English language learning and facilitate cultural exchange. We are looking for someone with excellent organizational and communication skills and with an interest and background in education, cross-cultural communication, and event planning to help us successfully administer and improve the program. The position is full-time, based in Sofia, with the possibility of hybrid/remote work.

About the position

As an ETA Program Assistant for the English Teaching Assistants Program at Fulbright Bulgaria, you will work in close collaboration and coordination with the ETA Program Officer. You will play an essential role in the selection, placement and training of American grantees and assist them in their cultural and professional adjustment. You will participate in the preparation of required documentation and reports, organize and conduct webinars, in-person trainings, and conferences, and provide the necessary support to the grantees and their hosts for the successful implementation of the program. You will interact with American grantees and their host school representatives, as well as with a wide network of partner organizations, including the Ministry of Education and Science, the US Institute of International Education, NGOs and educational institutions.

The Role's Responsibilities

  • Participates in the selection and placement of American grantees by assisting with processing paperwork, conducting interviews, and communicating with host schools. 
  • Assists the ETA Program Officer in daily communication with the grant recipients and their Bulgarian mentor-teachers by responding to inquiries via email, phone, Slack, WhatsApp, etc. 
  • Maintains and develops partnerships with Bulgarian institutions, host schools and partner organizations. 
  • Assists the ETA Program Officer by organizing and conducting on-site meetings with grantees, their Bulgarian mentor teachers and host school principals. Gives feedback to grantees on their performance and assists in resolving any problems that arise. 
  • Maintains databases, prepares letters, recommendations, contracts and other necessary documentation; conducts and processes surveys; prepares reports and statistics; prepares and maintains support resources such as manuals, presentations, etc. 
  • Assists in the organization of events such as the Orientation for American Fulbright Grantees, Mentor Teacher Orientation, 100 Days in Bulgaria Midterm Conference, Wrap-Up Seminar, etc. 
  • Assists in creating online and print content related to the program.

Qualifications and requirements

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in both English and Bulgarian. 
  • Relevant higher education degree. 
  • Minimum one year of professional experience in the field of education, event organizing or NGO sector. 
  • Experience in intercultural communication. 
  • Adaptability and flexibility, ability to meet deadlines and attention to detail. 
  • Ability to offer creative and innovative ideas and solutions to challenges. 
  • Ability to travel within the country as required by the program. 
  • Driving skills desirable but not required.

    Note: The ETA Program Assistant position is a full-time role that requires frequent domestic travel and occasional international travel.
