On Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2023, the <\/span>Bulgarian-American<\/span> Fulbright Commission<\/span><\/span> <\/span>gave<\/span> <\/span>thanks<\/span> <\/span>for<\/span> <\/span>its<\/span> <\/span>fantastic<\/span> <\/span>community<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>Bulgarian<\/span> <\/span>alumni<\/span> <\/span>by<\/span> <\/span><\/span>renewing the\u00a0annual Open Lectures, which highlight the achievements of Bulgarian Fulbright grantees. For the first time post-pandemic, the Fulbright Bulgaria community gathered to celebrate the knowledge and insights of our scholars, graduate students and visiting researchers. The title of the series was \u201cKnowledge that Sustains,\u201d since in challenging times the expanding of knowledge offers confidence and hope.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A friendly atmosphere infused the Open Lectures from the opening remarks to the final words of the last presentation. Ten Bulgarian <\/span>Fulbrighters<\/span> presented their research findings in short and captivating talks broadcast live on Facebook. The in-person\u00a0audience at <\/span>Launchee<\/span> consisted of alumni, friends, <\/span>partners<\/span> and citizens who learned about the event via our digital campaign.\u00a0The interdisciplinary program allowed the audience to compare <\/span>cutting-edge<\/span> research in the spheres of the humanities, hard <\/span>sciences<\/span> and professional fields. Dr. Biliana Manova, Assoc. Prof. Vladislav Slavov, Dr. <\/span>Velislava<\/span> Petrova and Gabriel Georgiev took us into the intricacies of legal access to information, the role of artificial intelligence in education, the importance of social consensus in waste policies, and efficient ways to design drones. In the second session the guests could learn more about digital social reading, spectral geometry and the correlation between shape and sound, and ways to empower signing communities from Assoc. Prof. Alexandra <\/span>Glavanakova<\/span>, Assoc. Prof. Alexander Petkov and Civil Society scholar Hristina <\/span>Katsipidou<\/span>. The coffee break allowed for <\/span>vivid<\/span> <\/span>conversations<\/span>, <\/span>reunions<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>new<\/span> <\/span>acquaintances<\/span>. <\/span>In<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>final<\/span> <\/span>session<\/span>, Dr. <\/span>Iva<\/span> <\/span>Boneva<\/span>, <\/span>Lazar<\/span> <\/span>Lazarov<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>Martina<\/span> <\/span>Novakova<\/span> <\/span>shared<\/span> <\/span>their<\/span> <\/span>perspectives<\/span> <\/span>on<\/span> <\/span>inclusive<\/span> <\/span>teaching<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>role<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>carbon<\/span> <\/span>offsets<\/span> <\/span>in<\/span> <\/span>combating<\/span> <\/span>pollution<\/span>, <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>amplifying<\/span> <\/span>empathy<\/span> <\/span>via<\/span> <\/span>social<\/span> <\/span>theatre<\/span>. <\/span>In<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>various<\/span> <\/span>threads<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>knowledge<\/span> <\/span>some<\/span> <\/span>tendencies<\/span> <\/span>were<\/span> <\/span>conspicuous<\/span>. <\/span>The<\/span> <\/span>digitalization<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>education<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>research<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>role<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>interactive<\/span> <\/span>social<\/span> <\/span>media<\/span> <\/span>platforms<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>artificial<\/span> <\/span>intelligence<\/span> <\/span>in<\/span> <\/span>learning<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>importance<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>community<\/span> <\/span>building<\/span> <\/span>pervade<\/span> <\/span>discussions<\/span> <\/span>in<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>academic<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>professional<\/span> <\/span>fields<\/span>. <\/span>It<\/span> <\/span>will<\/span> <\/span>be<\/span> <\/span>interesting<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>trace<\/span> <\/span>how<\/span> <\/span>these<\/span> <\/span>aspects<\/span> <\/span>develop<\/span> <\/span>next<\/span> <\/span>year<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fulbright Executive Director, Angela Rodel, closed the event\u00a0with warm words of thanks\u00a0to the lecturers and attendants. The sense of gratitude was profound <\/span>in<\/span> the following Thanksgiving party, where lecturers, alumni and guests had the chance to discuss informally the rich topics and enjoy a glass of wine together. The Fulbright team organizing the event also raised a toast\u00a0to the longevity of the initiative \u2013 we hope to see everyone back at Fulbright Open Lectures in 2024!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
