Alumni Grants
Encouraging continued alumni involvement
Bulgarian and American citizens
Support alumni academic and cultural projects
Expand impact within Bulgaria
Transparency in the application and selection process
Application deadline is February 28th
THE BULGARIAN FULBRIGHT COMMISSION BOARD HAS SET ASIDE FUNDS TO SUPPORT ALUMNI ACADEMIC AND CULTURAL PROJECTS TO ENCOURAGE CONTINUED ALUMNI INVOLVEMENT
The grants are designed to support alumni and projects based in and carried out in Bulgaria (by either Bulgarian or US citizens who are alumni of the Fulbright Bulgaria program). In the past, Fulbright Bulgaria has given such grants on an ad-hoc basis in response to alumni requests to the Commission board. The alumni grant fund will regularize the process so that all alumni are aware of this opportunity and so as to foster transparency in the application and selection process.
Types of Grants
1) Travel Award (1 per year)
This award is intended for Bulgarian or U.S. Fulbright alumni who wish to travel in order to:
- participate in an academic conference;
- take part in a training seminar; or
- conduct follow-up research on a topic directly related to their original Fulbright grant project.
Funds may be used to cover travel, accommodation, and conference fees, up to a total of EUR 1,500.
NB: Alumni grants are NOT official Fulbright grants. Awardees are therefore responsible for organizing their own travel and for obtaining any required visas or permissions.
2) Publication Award (1 per year)
An award of up to EUR 1,500 to support the publication of research resulting directly from the alum’s Fulbright project, either:
- in the form of a monograph, or
- as a scientific article in a highly indexed international journal.
3) Open Alumni Awards (1–2 per year, depending on availability of funds)
Awards of up to EUR 1,500 to support non-travel or non-publication-related alumni projects that expand the impact of the original Fulbright grant.
Examples of activities that may be supported include:
- organization of academic conferences;
- creation of artistic works;
- additional research;
- support for cultural, community, or educational initiatives.

Important Application Information
Each Fulbright Bulgaria alum may apply for only ONE type of alumni grant per year.
Preferred projects will have a direct tie to alumni’s Fulbright experience and will advance the goals and values of the Fulbright Program
Preferred projects will engage the Fulbright alumni community and expand the impact of the Fulbright program in Bulgaria
Joint proposals, submitted by two or more Fulbright Bulgaria alumni, are welcome. However, the total amount awarded for a joint project cannot exceed EUR 1,500 (i.e., alumni grants cannot be “stacked,” so that two alumni receive EUR 3,000 for a joint proposal). This limitation is intended to allow as many different projects as possible to receive funding.
Recipients of Fulbright Bulgaria Alumni Grants will be ineligible to apply again for two years following their successful application, in order to ensure that as many alumni as possible can benefit from this opportunity. Even after this two-year period, all else being equal, preference will be given to applicants who have not received alumni grants in the past.
