Interview by Maria Kostova
As an AUBG undergraduate and a Fulbright MA student at Cornell, you have always been passionate about computers and American-style education – how did these interests develop?
I was first inspired by technology when I was three years old after my parents bought our first family computer. I was astonished by it, not realizing that it would soon become my fondest dream and passion. As I grew, so did my fascination with computers, and I started exploring technology on my own – experimenting with software, creating small projects, and teaching myself programming. These early experiences increased my curiosity, eventually leading me to realize that I wanted to dedicate my life to technology.
This passion guided my educational journey, starting with my studies at the American University in Bulgaria, where I pursued a double major in Computer Science and Economics. allowed me to explore various disciplines while developing my strong foundation in Computer Science. Beyond coding and technical skills, AUBG’s liberal arts model also further developed my critical thinking and interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving. Eager to push my limits further, I aspired to study at a world-class institution where I could learn from leading experts about Computer Science, technology, and innovations. My desire to learn, along with the support from the Fulbright Bulgarian Leaders Grant, brought me to Cornell University. Here I have had the chance to work on exciting projects and learn how technology can drive progress.
How did the Fulbright Bulgarian Leaders grant broaden your academic and professional horizons?
The Fulbright Bulgarian Leaders grant has had a huge impact on both my academic and professional perspectives. This invaluable support made my education at Cornell University possible, covering not only the tuition but also the living expenses. With this financial assistance, I have been able to fully dedicate myself to my studies, free from financial worries, and truly make the most of my time here.
From an academic perspective, this support has given me the freedom to focus on my studies by fully immersing myself in my coursework and exploring new areas in Computer Science. In addition to my technical classes, I have taken several key Entrepreneurship courses, which have provided me with problem-solving skills in a business and innovation-driven approach. Learning from renowned professors and engaging in complex interdisciplinary projects has expanded my knowledge and intellectual horizons, while also teaching me how to combine different disciplines in developing creative solutions. On a professional level, this Fulbright opportunity has significantly enhanced my confidence and competitiveness. Here at Cornell, I have made invaluable friendships and connections, with some evolving into lifelong friendships and potential professional partnerships. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this inspiring and motivating community, and I am determined to apply the knowledge and insights I have gained to make a meaningful impact in my field.

You are already a “local” on the Cornell campus. Could you share several things that impressed or surprised you the most as a graduate student in the US?
Until now, I have had the opportunity to experience education in three different countries – Bulgaria, Hungary, and the United States. While each system offers unique educational experiences and has its strengths, studying in the U.S. at Cornell has stood out due to the community’s multidisciplinary approach, the academic flexibility, and the encouraging campus environment. One aspect that impressed me here was the diversity of knowledge and interests among students. Many people here are not just specialists in one area – they excel in multiple fields and find ways to combine them and explore their intersections. It’s very inspiring to see students who are exceptional in Computer Science but also skilled in Architecture, Business, Economics, or even Philosophy. This multidisciplinary approach encourages creativity and innovation, and it has motivated me to broaden my own perspective. The ability to take courses from various disciplines, work on interdisciplinary projects, and collaborate with students from all around the globe has been incredible. In that way, learning here goes beyond classrooms – students actively engage in discussion, research, and real-world problem-solving.
Finally, the Cornell campus itself is an incredible place to live and study. Situated in the scenic landscape of Ithaca in upstate New York, it offers the perfect balance of academic immersion and natural beauty. The excellent facilities and libraries contribute to the environment that promotes learning and growth. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Cornell truly embodies its mission of providing knowledge and opportunities in every field. This is an inspiring place that pushes you to dream bigger, do better, and achieve more.
Do you have any time for fun and relaxation at all?
Graduate school can be intense and demanding, but I have realized that making time for relaxation and social activities is crucial for maintaining productivity and creativity. While my schedule is often packed with classes, projects, and coursework, I make sure to balance it with good sleep, time for other hobbies, and activities that recharge me.
Cornell and the surrounding area offer plenty of opportunities to unwind. Whenever I have free time, I enjoy connecting with friends and other students. We often organize outdoor activities such as kayaking when the weather allows, or hiking to explore the stunning waterfalls, gorges, and parks around Ithaca. These experiences allow us to enjoy nature and recharge while taking a break from our studies. I also appreciate grabbing meals with friends at the dining halls, where I can relax and enjoy conversations between classes.
Additionally, I try to participate in student events and gatherings, which are a great way to meet people from diverse disciplines and expand my network. A memorable thing for me was celebrating my first-ever Thanksgiving, experiencing this important cultural tradition, and connecting with others. That said, “partying” now is not so much about nights out but more about meaningful conversations, cultural exchange, and celebrating academic wins with friends.

Where do you see yourself after completing your current MA program at Cornell?
My professional and educational journey in Computer Science at Cornell has been incredibly dynamic and enriching, combining theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on experience. It has allowed me to work on various projects in numerous areas, learn new technologies, and collaborate within teams, all of which contribute to my skills. I’m confident that the knowledge I’ve gained here will help me realize my full potential.
Looking ahead, I am excited to return to Bulgaria and contribute to the rapidly developing IT sector there, which has immense untapped potential. In the near future, I plan to deepen my professional experience, stay committed to lifelong learning, and focus on projects that create a meaningful impact. I am particularly passionate about exploring entrepreneurial ventures and turning my ideas into successful startups or non-profit initiatives that address real challenges.
In the long term, I envision collaborating with industry leaders and people who share a love for technology to tackle modern issues and develop solutions that will not only drive technological innovation but also bring about positive change. I am determined to leverage my skills and knowledge to shape a future where technology enhances society, both locally in Bulgaria and globally.
Through my experiences at AUBG and Cornell, I have strengthened my devotion to ever-evolving technologies and lifelong learning and development. Each step has prepared me to make meaningful contributions to the field. I am eager to apply what I have learned, create innovative tech solutions, and help shape the future of my country and the global tech landscape.
