Prof. Georgi Valchev

Minister of Education and Science

Prof. Georgi Valchev, PhD, is the Minister of Education and Science. Prior to his appointment, he served as Rector of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, having been elected to the position in November 2023. He is a distinguished scholar and expert in cultural studies and history, with extensive academic leadership and management experience.
From 2015 to 2023, he served as Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, with responsibility for doctoral studies and continuing education. His academic career at Sofia University also includes serving as Head of the Department of History and Theory of Culture (2011–2019) and Academic Secretary of the Faculty of Philosophy. He is the founder and director of the Master’s Program in **Management and Socialization of Cultural Heritage**.
Prof. Valchev is the author of numerous influential scholarly publications and monographs, including *History and Its Public Uses*, *Zahari Stoyanov and the Symbolic Capital of the Bulgarian National Revival*, and *Foreigners in Post-Liberation Bulgarian Culture*. His research focuses on the public uses of history and the governance of cultural processes.
He holds Master’s degrees in History and Philosophy from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. In 1998, he earned his PhD in Cultural Studies from the Center for Cultural Studies. In 2023, he was appointed Professor in the Department of History and Theory of Culture.
Prof. Valchev is fluent in French and Russian.
